The John Wick series strongly implied that the titular character had died by the end of John Wick Chapter 4. However, it has already been shown in the series how he may return to a subsequent installment. John WICKfeatures a hero who’s all but impossible to take down. Keanu Reeves had survived incredible odds before John Wick Chapter 4. He fell off of a building in John Wick Chapter 3 and Parabellum. While this episode showed that Wick could survive against all odds, a moment even earlier highlighted his ability to overcome John Wick Chapter 4 ending.
Fans are speculating about John Wick’s possible survival, given that John Wick Chapter 5 has already been confirmed despite his fate still being unknown. It’s not known if the film will continue Chapter 5 or serve as a sequel, but it is inevitable that Wick will die. The previous film ended after the Sacre Coeur shootout with an apparent shot of Wick and his wife, which supposedly resolved his fate. John WICK has already shown a way for the character to return after a similar incident.
Keanu Reeves survived death in the original John Wick.
The original film may be the most convincing example of a character beating the odds, as seen in chapter 4‘s final. The franchise opens with a bruised John Wick crawling out of his vehicle after an epic gunfight. He pulls out his phone as it begins to rain and watches old videos with his wife. The opening scenes strongly suggest that the character will die as his strength begins to fade. The film’s ending changes this perception completely in it’s buisness world.
John Wick Full Timeline Explained: When Each Movie & Spinoff Takes Place
John Wick and its spin-offs were released in a ten year period. It is surprising how short the timeline of In-Universe’s storyline.
John, instead of succumbing, miraculously recovers. He breaks into an animal clinic, treats his injuries and then rescues a pitbull puppy before walking home. Given John Wick’s physical condition at the beginning of the movie, this scene set a precedent that he could overcome impossible odds to survive. This moment is important in context with the rest of series but it’s especially poignant given the conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4.
John Wick Chapter 4
- which mirrors the opening of The first movie, is a perfect replica.
- The similarity between John Wick’s actions and his fate in chapter 4 is what makes them so important. Both scenes show him with apparent fatal injuries and sat down, ready to accept his fate. Both scenes also show him thinking about his wife and how that is his main motivation. The only difference, aside from the environment, could be that John Wick shows John getting up to heal himself whereas chapter 4 does not.
Thematically speaking, the mirroring of the opening scene and the erstwhile ending brings the story full circle. John WICK: Chapter 5 continues the story of Chapter 2. However, this also sets a precedent on how John will use his wife’s memories to gain the extra strength he needs to survive. It may be a cop out to repeat the events of the first movie, but the similarity between scenes provides a blueprint on how the franchise could retroactively reverse the death of Keanu Reeves.
John Wick’s ending can still make John alive.
On a certain level, Johnwick: Chapter 4 is just as conclusive as originally believed. The poignant scene at the end of the film, which shows that John Wick is indeed doomed to die is the most convincing evidence yet. There are a number of ways in which John Wick can return to, without the series veering into the supernatural.
John Wick’s death has never been shown to the camera. It was implied that Wick is alive, but without a shot in the morgue it’s possible. In the story, it’s implied that the assassin could still be alive if he faked his death. Wick has already managed to escape the underground once. Death would appear to be his only option. He could return to his life before John WICK, and perhaps finally accept the death of his wife.
It is implied that Winston could be involved in the plot to deceive the High Table. Wick, at the end of chapter 4 asks if he’ll ” bring me home“, before walking down the steps of the Parisian Church. It’s not impossible that this meant that Wick would take his body to his wife , but the fact that Winston doesn’t follow John, and stays apart, could indicate that it is a secret communication between them, in which Winston believes he will grant John peace if he makes everyone believe that John’s body has been buried back home.

Bring John Wick back and you risk ruining the symbolism of Chapter 4’s ending
While faking John’s death might allow the series to easily explain how Johnwick: Chapter 5 can narratively continue where chapter 4 ended, this approach could have negative effects on the story of the previous movie. chapter 4 implies that Wick has finally achieved the peace he’s been searching for in four films. The connection made between John Wick and chapter 4 was also a strong symbol. John Wick is finally at peace and can join his wife. If he returns, the poignancy of that moment will be lost.
It’s easy to understand why Keanu Reeves, who played the title assassin in the original film franchise, would be brought back. John’s narrative is nearly over. was arguably forgetting the emotions that originally made Wick a captivating protagonist. Chapter 4,, did a great job at restoring that element to his character. It’s not worth it to bring him back for John Wick – the next film.
