The battle was still on in 75 C.E. The battle was still going on. Blue Cosmos invasion, independence movements. Compass is created to monitor the world’s peace and calm things down. The Emerging Country Foundation suggested a joint attack with Compass on the Blue Cosmos Headquarters.
Production Details and Background
It was originally in production since 2006 but was delayed due to the health of main writer Chiaki MOROSA. The film was produced a few years after Morosawa died in 2016. It will be released on 26 January 2024. It grossed more than US$28.9million, making it the most successful film of the Gundam series.
Plot
After the Second Alliance-PLANT War ended in C.E.75 and a year later, Blue Cosmos remnants led independent movements to continue attacking other countries using mobile suits left over from the war. Kira Yamato, the leader of COMPASS Mobile suits, Seo House, led his team of Shinn asuka, Lunamaria hawke, and Agnes Gibenrath, from the newly constructed battleship Millennium, to stop an attack on Africa. The attack ended with the retreat of remnants. Lacus Clyne, the COMPASS President, holds a PLANT leaders’ meeting to try and bring down remnants. Lacus, however, wants to release Kira from war’s effects. He continues to be plagued by nightmares caused by Durandal.
1. The Aftermath of the Second Alliance-PLANT War
A country in transition, headed by the government Foundation, proposed to Compass a joint action against Blue Cosmos. Lacus confides to Kira, and they both agree to go to the Foundation government to accept this operation. Murrue RAMIUS, the commander of the Archangel battleship and the Millennium arrive in the area near Eurasia. Orphee Lau Tao welcomes all members of the Foundation and shakes Lacus’ hand. Kira was unaware that she had a psychic connection with Queen Aura before going to the palace to see her. Black Knights, a mobile suit squad of the group is soon noticed. Shinn defends Kira as they mock him for being a weak swordsman. However, he loses to Black Knight Shura.
2. Rise of Blue Cosmos Remnants
Foundation proposes, meanwhile, an operation in conjunction with Earth Alliance and COMPASS that will bring down Michael the leader of Blue Cosmos’ remnant. Both factions agree. Lacus overheard Agnes’s attempt to hit Kira on the Millennium and ran away. Kira notices her and quickly follows, but is stopped by Orphee. She mocks Kira for knowing only how to fight.
3. Kira Yamato and the COMPASS Mobile Suits
Foundation’s true colours are soon revealed during the mission to destroy Blue Cosmos. Lacus is used to complete the Destiny Plan, left incomplete by Durandal. Orphee’s psychic powers are used to convince the Black Knights that Kira must be taken away. Kira is possessed by his mind and chases Michael while crossing the Eurasia borders. Kira is branded a traitor by the Knights, and the Rising Freedom, guest posting, his mobile suit was destroyed after Agnes arrived and betrayed COMPASS. Knights attack the Archangel and launch nuclear missiles to destroy Foundation headquarters, the country as well as the nation. Compass is defeated in the final battle, with Immortal Justice and Gyan Stroms destroyed and Archangel and Rising Freedom completely destroyed. Lacus, who had evacuated with Foundation and escaped, was also taken as a hostage.
4. Lacus Clyne’s Diplomatic Efforts
- Athrun calls a meeting in order to expose Foundation’s real objectives, and to try to remove Lacus from the Foundation before it uses her name as a pretext to begin a war.
- Foundation, meanwhile, uses Requiem to destroy Eurasia in the name of the faked nuclear attack. They also declare war on those who refuse them – whether it’s the PLANTs and Earth.
- Athrun persuades Kira to join the fight after he breaks down. COMPASS receives the upgraded specifications of its past mobile suits, Kira’s Strike Freedom and Shinn’s Destiny, from orb, before launching into space aboard Millennium.
Key Characters and Voice Actors
Orphee, meanwhile, tries to advance onto Lacus using his powers. She breaks free but continues to be held as a hostage. Earth Alliance and ZAFT soon begin a war, fearing that Foundation would destroy them if Earth Alliance did not heed the Foundation’s ultimatum. ZAFT’s Yzak Elsman and Dearka Joule break away from ZAFT and join the Eternal in order to stop ZAFT with their mobile suits Duel Blitz, and Lightning Buster.
Themes Explored in the Film
Compass launches its mobile suits into battle. They successfully fooled Foundation, and saved Lacus. Orphee, enraged with Ingrid and his mobile suit, flees to face Kira in order to overwhelm her, but Athrun, hiding in the Z’gok shell, saves him. Lacus, in his Proud Defender, arrives to help Kira destroy all the mobile suits and vessels of the Foundation. Shinn and Lunamaria disable Agnes’s Gyan while Athrun and Athrun’s Shura are defeated by Athrun. Orphee, Ingrid and Kira are finally defeated and the war is over by the Freedom after being convinced by Lacus’ and Kira’s belief about the conflict.
Animation and Visual Effects
The mechas were designed by Kunio OKawara, with Satoshi Shinmu as the 3DCG Production Desk. Fujita was initially challenged by the combination of the new Rising Freedom Gundam with the Immortal Justice Gundam. The Immortal justice was remade several times. Initially, the MS that was used to make the CG models would be only used in the first part of the film, where Archangel Sink. But as production progressed and the production of the cuts and models increased, Fukuda became more confident with CG. The decision was made to create many CGs. Nearly 60 mobile suits, including those with breaks, were made. Fujita has only blaze gear for Zaku Phantom. However, as a joke, he also added gunner gear. It did not appear. Initially, the plan was to draw everything and then add the CG Zeus silhouette over the top. The staff hurriedly made a model of Akatsuki three or four weeks prior to delivery because they feared a time limit. Archangel was completed in just over one year. Millennium took one year and eight months.
Mecha Design and Production Challenges
They put a lot of effort in the water landing and wings for Destiny Gundam, Strike Freedom Gundam. Fujita, the director of the film, was passionate about its production. Fukuda had high standards for the visuals. Gouf had already made half of the CG model. Destiny Impulse Gundam had also been planned, but when the director realized that it would “overlap with Destiny”, Impulse Gundam Spec II was created. Fukuda’s own childhood inspired him to animate bicycles, as he relates bikes to superheroes such as Densetsu. Fukuda was unable to buy cars due to financial reasons. He saved his money instead for bikes. Fukuda personally illustrated the scene in which Lacus and Kira ride their bikes together, even though it was not a major part of the film. The Gold Wing, which Kira rides is actually a reciprocating motor.
Director’s Inspirations and Influences
Fukuda said that Top Gun, and Star Wars were his influences when it came to special effects. Shigeta corrected the CG images directly before recreating them. This was especially true for the cuts which required more expressiveness. The director wanted the Rising Freedom’s transformation to have a unique look and feel compared with the previous versions of Kira mecha. This was why the scene was recreated several times. Shigeta mentioned a scene in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, with Fujita saying that they were relieved to be able to use multiple colors. From the launch of Destiny Gundam Spec II, to the destruction of the battleship by staff members together, several visual effects were created.
